Beryllium CopperFrom sidewall frames to slotted plates

Beryllium copper can sit inside an EDC fidget's sidewalls or form plates used in its sound-producing design. Arx-2 and SuanQ-S show why those parts need to be distinguished from the main body, shell and other metal fittings.

Beryllium copper is a copper alloy containing beryllium, rather than pure copper or one fixed grade. Its position within these fidgets is more informative than the colour of the complete object.

TiNB specifies it for Arx-2's sidewall frames; S-ONE specifies it for the plates on the SuanQ-S Copper Cloud Tuning Fork max edition. Neither example discloses an alloy grade, so an industrial beryllium-copper data sheet cannot simply become its specification.

TiNB's September 2021 introduction to Arx-2 Caliburn specifies beryllium-copper sidewall frames as standard. The same paragraph identifies the blade body as TC-21 titanium alloy, the basic shell as TC-4 titanium alloy, and higher-specification shells as zirconium alloy or superconductor.

This list gives a useful reading order: locate the beryllium-copper sidewall frames first, then consider the shell fitted to each edition. It does not describe an all-beryllium-copper object, and a titanium-alloy shell does not make every internal part titanium.

The disassembly photograph reveals edge structures, round inserts and carbon-fibre texture. The image helps explain the layers; the material identities still come from the brand's text. Gold or grey colour alone is not an alloy identification.

Assembly and configuration

Around 101 g applies to the standard titanium-alloy configuration

TiNB describes an interlocking assembly, glue-free magnets in the main structure and 118 parts including the magnets. It lists approximately 101 g for the standard titanium-alloy configuration. These figures belong to that product specification, rather than to the beryllium-copper frames alone or every higher-specification shell.

The original attributes its contact-surface design to internal carbon fibre and specially shaped magnets, alongside a claim that it will never wear. This is not adopted here as a wear-resistance property of beryllium copper or treated as a long-term test result.

Refer to the earlier disassembly photograph for the relationship between the sidewalls and internal structure; each material remains tied to the part specified in the original text.

Keep the editions distinct

SuanQ-S: slotted plates and a separate 304 steel extension

S-ONE's March 2025 SuanQ-S announcement describes four configurations. The Copper Cloud Tuning Fork max edition has a graphite-black titanium-alloy body, G10 Copper Cloud buttons and beryllium-copper plates with tuning-fork slots. Its tuning-fork extension is listed separately as 304 stainless steel.

The brand describes the plates' finish as a heat-treated, aged green stonewash. That appearance description does not disclose an alloy grade, treatment parameters or a standard hardening condition. Likewise, Copper Cloud is the name of the G10 design; it does not make the buttons a copper alloy.

The first three editions in the same announcement instead have tungsten-copper plates without tuning-fork slots. The max edition's beryllium-copper plates and slot design cannot be transferred to them. The brand describes the sound of the slotted plates working with the extension, but provides no comparable sound, hardness or elasticity tests that would establish beryllium copper as universally louder or more durable.

Material background

Why the grade and condition still matter

Materion's written guide distinguishes beryllium-copper alloy families and age-hardenable or mill-hardened supply conditions, explaining the role of heat treatment in strength. It shows why the material name still needs further conditions before performance can be specified.

Neither EDC example provides a grade or composition certificate. They are not automatically labelled C17200 or assigned hardness, density or fatigue-life figures taken from another grade. The supplier's background information also does not establish that it supplied these fidgets.

For a player, the edition, the location of the beryllium-copper parts and the components working alongside them are the useful identifiers available here. Comparisons of sound, elasticity or long-term wear need tests on the actual configuration; colour and a material name cannot supply those conditions.
