Cotton has a place in EDC beyond clothing. A pocket hank shows why a cotton face, a wiping surface and a cord can each have a different material specification.

Voyage Bladeworks pairs a printed cotton front with a microfiber back. Looking at the two sides is more useful than assuming that words such as soft or absorbent describe every part of the finished piece.

Turn it over first

The printed face and the wiping side have different roles. Read the maker’s cleaning claims alongside its backing specification. Lens-grade is the product description here, not a TRB test of compatibility with every lens or coating.

The fibre and its processing

CottonWorks explains cotton’s interaction with water through its fine pores and capillary spaces. It also notes that raw cotton carries surface oils and waxes, so preparation matters.

A fibre name alone does not tell you how dry a finished cloth will wipe a surface or how quickly it will dry. The institution’s guide focuses on nonwovens; it does not supply absorption, linting or wiping results for this printed hank.

Beyond the print

The photographs show zig-zag stitching around the edge, with a grommet and cord at one corner. These are separate construction details; the cotton declaration applies to the front fabric.

Care for the complete piece

The maker specifies hand washing without detergents, followed by air drying. Keep that instruction attached to the complete hank, including its print, backing and fittings.
