CowhideDisplay mats, leather pads in wooden trays and vegetable-tanned coasters
Cowhide in EDC is not limited to portable leather goods. It can form a tabletop mat, line a wooden tray or become a coaster whose appearance changes with use. First check that the source actually identifies cowhide, then distinguish a mainly leather exterior from a small leather part fitted to another material.
Cowhide identifies the animal source; vegetable tanning identifies a tanning process. The Tuscan vegetable-tanned leather consortium explains that vegetable tanning can be used on different animal hides, while its region mainly uses bovine hides. A product described only as vegetable-tanned leather is therefore not automatically cowhide.
The four product sources below explicitly identify cowhide, but use it differently. Hide grade, tanning formulation, finish and raw-leather thickness are not inferred from photographs when the maker does not disclose them. Displayed toys also remain separate from the leather mats.

Carry: cowhide forms the main resting surface
Carry’s rectangular Tangcao leather mat: the maker specifies imported cowhide and a product size of 16 × 24 cm.
Carry EDC describes its rectangular Tangcao leather mat as made from imported cowhide, with full scrolling decoration and emblem patterns among the options. The photographs show black patterns, raised edges and metal fasteners. Cowhide is a major part of the exterior, while the fasteners remain distinct components.
The rectangular mat measures 16 × 24 cm. The source separately lists a thickness of 1.3 cm as a finished-product dimension; it does not say that the raw leather itself is 1.3 cm thick. That figure should not be used to compare leather-sheet gauges.
The round mat: another shape in the same series
The round mat in the same series has a stated diameter of 12 cm. Its pattern, outline and edge fasteners belong to the finished product.
The small round mat released in the same article has a diameter of 12 cm and is likewise identified as a Tangcao leather mat. Its circular outline, perimeter fasteners and central pattern distinguish it from the rectangular version.
The photographs place metal toys on both shapes and illustrate their resting-surface role. This display does not provide standardized load, impact or abrasion testing, so it cannot establish protective performance.
Palette: a wooden tray with separate cowhide pads
The Palette Exclamation edition, jointly designed by MOT and MonoSkate, uses one piece of wood identified by the maker as Bahua, CNC-machined into the tray body and paired with custom cowhide pads. MOT’s designer Shuishui created the embossed pad pattern.
The release lists one tray body, one main patterned leather pad, one small round logo pad and one long-slot pad in the set. Cowhide belongs to the three listed pads, not the wooden tray body. The article does not disclose the leather’s thickness or hide grade.
Biscuit: vegetable tanning and marks from use
ClownOrange’s Biscuit coaster is explicitly listed as using imported cowhide associated with the Tuscan vegetable-tanned leather consortium. The brand also presents the biscuit-shaped coaster as a small EDC mat for resting toys or taking photographs. The imported provenance and consortium connection remain the brand’s material claim, not an independently verified certificate for the particular hide.
The brand says the leather gradually darkens with use, may develop scratches and has no chemical surface coating. Those statements stay with this product and its material description. They do not promise a fixed darkening schedule or establish coating, scratch behaviour or lifespan for all cowhide.
Moon Surface opener: cowhide is an optional cord
Metal Toys-Dz. identifies the Moon Surface bottle opener body as C360 brass and offers an optional cowhide cord knot in two colours at the tail. Cowhide belongs only to the cord; the metal opener is a separate component.
The release lists the opener alone and the opener with a cowhide cord knot as separate purchasing options. The opener’s dimensions, weight and the workshop’s use test concern the metal tool, not the leather cord. Cord tanning, hide grade and dimensions are not disclosed.
Pattern, tanning and surface finish are different details
Another set of impressed designs shown in the same Carry article. Cowhide does not by itself identify the pattern, shape or surface treatment.
Carry’s scrolling decoration and impressed emblems describe a surface pattern; Biscuit’s vegetable tanning describes a leather-making process; Palette combines several cowhide pads with a wooden body. These details explain different aspects of a product and cannot substitute for one another.
Photographs can show patterns, edges, fasteners and where objects rest. A particular finish, hide layer or care method still requires product-specific information. There is no single oiling, soaking or cleaning procedure supplied here for all of these products.
