Desert IronwoodFrom paired wooden shells to plates on metal sliders
How one piece of wood becomes two shells, and how its grain pairs with metal plates, are the practical details to explore in these desert ironwood EDC examples.
Shangshangqian uses it for wooden shells, while Tiaoweiqian lists it as a randomly allocated plate option. The Canghai plates for Price Tag add laser engraving to the wood.
Each use has its own component and version: shell pairing, metal finishes and the grain of a wooden plate are different things to look at.

Shangshangqian: pairing the two wooden shells
GD EDC specifies desert ironwood for its January 2025 Shangshangqian Xi version. The maker describes cutting from a thick piece of stock, dividing it in two during machining, and making the two halves into upper and lower shells to keep them paired.
The side-view photograph shows curved surfaces, seams and contrasting grain. Pairing is part of this product’s manufacturing approach. Colour and grain still vary within a piece of wood, so it does not promise an exact mirror image on every set.
The same wood, three metal-plate treatments
This Xi release lists three combinations: aged brass inlaid with a copper bead; aged copper inlaid with a brass bead; and brass that is sandblasted, surface-polished and then gold-plated. The variations concern the metal plates and their treatment; the wooden shells remain the desert ironwood version.
The article separately specifies a closely spaced track and 12 steps over the full travel. Those are features of this slider’s mechanism, not properties of the wood. The following Xi article introduces a G10 version with a different body material.
Tiaoweiqian: grain on a narrow plate
The Tiaoweiqian wooden-plate group. This release lists both desert ironwood and snakewood; individual wood types are not labelled in the photograph.
The regular stainless-steel Tiaoweiqian released in December 2025 lists desert ironwood or snakewood plates allocated at random. Here, the wood covers a long, narrow face alongside the metal structure.
The group photograph is useful for comparing grain direction, tone and engraving placement. Because each plate’s wood is not labelled, both desert ironwood and snakewood remain within the stated range; the whole group is not identified as desert ironwood.
Canghai for Price Tag: plain wood and laser engraving
RUMU EDC’s August 2024 Price Tag plate preview lists both a plain desert ironwood version and Canghai, described as laser-engraved desert ironwood. The same wood description appears in a plain surface and a patterned plate version.
This case is retained in text. The material claim applies to the plates, rather than the entire Price Tag fidget. Canghai’s engraved design is also distinct from the wood’s natural grain.
A botanical reference, separate from product identification
The US National Park Service’s plant information for Joshua Tree National Park lists desert ironwood as a common name of Olneya tesota. This provides a botanical reference for the English name.
The EDC examples here follow the makers’ desert ironwood material descriptions. Their finished wood has not been independently identified by species or age. For a specific configuration, distinguish shells, plates and metal parts first, then examine the grain on the particular set.
