Copper MokumeLayered metal through waves, grooves and hammered surfaces
Copper mokume rewards a closer look at how different metal layers cross a finished surface. Fine lines meet waves, flowing textures or hammered hollows. A mokume plate, an inner insert and a mokume edition still describe different uses of the material.
MACKIE’s three-colour CP3 series, TW’s two-colour button inserts, Shengbei and the Shishen follow-up edition show how material pattern, surface shaping and component placement work together.

Layered metals, rather than a single copper grade
Tongma, short for the Chinese name “copper damascus”, is discussed here as copper mokume. Mokume-gane is another term encountered in descriptions of these layered metals. The wood-like pattern does not imply wood, nor does the name specify one homogeneous copper alloy.
Sakmar describes combinations of copper, brass and nickel silver, joined under heat and pressure before further work creates the patterns. Its usual two- and three-colour combinations have different constituent metals, but the word “two-colour” alone does not establish the recipe in a particular finished product.

Fine layers across hammered hollows
MACKIE’s January 2022 SCP introduction describes fine-lined, three-colour copper mokume and explicitly names brass, white copper and copper. Those are the source’s material descriptions; it gives no individual grades or layer proportions.
The maker distinguishes the wave pattern on CP3, the flowing-water pattern on CP3 NANO and the hammered back of CP3-M. In the enlarged photographs, fine material layers coexist with grooves or hollows. Surface shaping reveals the layers across different contours; “hammered mokume” is not a new chemical recipe.
CP3-M was an additional intermediate size in this release. MACKIE says its width and thickness match CP3, while its length falls between CP3 and NANO. The maker’s comments about comfort under the thumb remain personal impressions, not TRB test results.
Cookie 2.0: mokume only in the insert

Steel outside, copper mokume inside
One configuration of TW EDC’s August 2026 Cookie 2.0 spinner buttons combines a Damascus-steel outer ring with a Sakmar two-colour copper-mokume insert. The steel pattern and the mokume pattern can both be seen, but the assembly should not be described as entirely copper mokume.
The stated button dimensions are 24.5 mm in diameter and 16 mm thick. These are overall button dimensions, not measurements of the mokume insert alone. The article gives neither the insert’s separate weight nor its exact layer composition.
A copper-mokume Shengbei still uses other materials
The copper-mokume version in CHIMAGO’s Shengbei Sanjie release. The maker separately specifies PEEK claws and black Teflon patches for the revised mechanism.

CHIMAGO’s August 2026 Shengbei Sanjie introduction names copper-mokume, zirconium-damascus and titanium-damascus editions separately. The photograph here shows the copper-mokume version; a shared family and similar shape do not make those materials interchangeable.
The revised internal claws are separate PEEK parts secured with screws, and black Teflon patches are added at contact areas. Not every part of the copper-mokume edition is therefore copper mokume. Claims about retaining the ball and improving the sliding action describe this mechanism; they are not treated here as properties of the material.
Shishen: mokume plates on a steel body
In its August 2026 follow-up announcement, Zeus Plan distinguishes this Shishen configuration from the exhibition edition: a Damascus-steel body, wave-pattern copper-mokume plates and split clock-design buttons. The shortened name “copper-mokume Shishen” still needs an edition attached to it.
In this follow-up, copper mokume describes the plates. The exhibition edition’s construction should not be transferred to it. The maker warns that the copper material can oxidise, change colour and show scratches, and describes the assembled product as heavy. These are notices about this product, not measured findings for every copper-mokume fidget.
What to expect from the surface
When looking at copper mokume, separate its fine metal layers from the surface shaping. One provides colour and layered detail; the other produces waves, flowing forms or hammered hollows. The same material name can also refer to parts with very different dimensions and positions in a product.
Consult the maker’s care instructions if you want to preserve a particular colour or texture. A polishing method for plain exposed copper should not automatically be applied to carved, inlaid or moving assemblies. These sources do not provide one maintenance procedure that applies to every copper-mokume fidget.
