Yunxi: a wood outline around bright shell insets

RUMU explicitly lists this Yunxi shell-panel configuration as bubinga burl with white mother-of-pearl. In the photograph, nested cloud shapes define the brown wood frame, with pale shell filling the spaces inside. The darker and lighter wood grain and the shell’s bright reflections occupy distinct areas.

This Yunxi release supports interchangeable tracks and panels. All four material versions in the release come with a cross-tone track combining high and low tones. The package also includes a panel with a random resin-coated design and a tassel cord. Bubinga names this version’s wood choice; the mother-of-pearl, spare panel and mechanical track are separate parts of the configuration.

From a handheld slider to a one-piece desk tray

MonoSkate uses bubinga for Palette, a desktop accessory. The maker describes CNC machining and careful sanding of a single piece of wood, with no joined sections. A curved profile and curved recesses along the sides shape the tray, while round recesses can hold spare spinner buttons.

The early Mini tray article lists a length of 156 mm, a width of 96 mm and a round recess diameter of 27 mm. A later preorder notice distinguishes the tray with three small round pads from the configuration with an additional rectangular leather pad. Those dimensions and pad counts belong to this Mini tray and do not automatically apply to other collaboration versions.

The tray shows wood serving as a holder for frequently used small toys and spare spinner buttons, a different role from Yunxi’s mechanical slider body.

The Exclamation Mark edition: wood and three cowhide pads

The Palette Exclamation Mark edition, jointly designed by MOT and MonoSkate, is likewise described as CNC machined from a single piece of bubinga, then polished and sanded. The article separately specifies cowhide pads: one patterned main pad, one small round logo pad and one long channel pad per set.

In this configuration, wood forms the tray body and cowhide pads form a separate contact layer. The embossed designs belong to the pads. This arrangement should be recorded separately from the early Mini tray’s three small round pads.

Bubinga and burl: keep the descriptions distinct

This page retains the makers’ descriptions of bubinga and bubinga burl. Bubinga is a timber trade name: ATIBT’s Fair & Precious resource lists three associated species, Guibourtia demeusei, G. pellegriniana and G. tessmannii, rather than restricting the name to a single species.

That reference helps explain the material category; it does not identify the species in Yunxi or Palette. RUMU’s additional description of burl belongs to its selection for this version. Brown colour and grain in a photograph cannot establish a species. Look at the shape and grain of the exposed wood, then compare the shell, pads and mechanical configuration.
