Yabai WoodPALM BEADS AND REPLACEABLE INLAYS

In objects made for handling, yabai wood draws attention to the way grain follows a shape—and to where the wood is used. A palm bead sold by TIBUKKYO and an inlay option announced by ZacLab show two different approaches.

The photographs here come from TIBUKKYO’s product page for a 50 mm palm bead, listed in Chinese as “Taihang yabai wood”. Yabai is the seller’s material name; Taihang is also part of the listing’s name. Neither the precise tree species nor this piece’s geographical origin has been independently established.

Follow the grain around the sphere

The bead in TIBUKKYO’s photographs ranges from golden brown to reddish brown. Fine lines follow its curved surface, gathering into waves and whorls. These changes in tone and pattern give the photographed piece its most immediate visual character.

The seller describes a bead made from wood, intended for handling in the palm while seated, as well as for display or devotional use. The photographs show its shape, grain and surface reflections. They provide no weight or coefficient of friction, and cannot establish its scent or feel in the hand.

A nominal 50 mm bead, offered singly or in pairs

Both the product name and description state 50 mm, with purchase options for one or two beads. This is the seller’s nominal size. The photographs show a single bead; the display stand and packaging in the background should not automatically be treated as included accessories.

The sphere presents a continuous curve to the fingers, with grain across its visible surface. It is a different form of handling object from a mechanically structured slider. TRB has not tested this bead for spinning, drops or prolonged handling.

On the PEEK Plane, yabai is an inlay option

In its announcement of 15 May 2025, ZacLab explicitly identifies black or white PEEK as the body material of the Plane with special replaceable inlays. Yabai appears among the inlay options, alongside leathers, stabilised wood and Shoushan stone. The list does not describe a Plane made entirely from yabai wood.

ZacLab’s announcement of 14 August 2025 again uses the name yabai for the PEEK Plane 2.0. It says the inlays can be removed without dismantling the mechanism and that overall thickness has been reduced. It also describes a material label visible after opening the package. These construction details apply to version 2.0 and should not be assigned to every earlier version.

The announcements establish the material option, but the available photographs do not identify an exact yabai inlay. The bead shown here is a separate TIBUKKYO listing; its photographs cannot supply the missing visual record of ZacLab’s inlay.

Keep the trade name and its limits together

These sources use a trade name transliterated here as Yabai. A shared name does not establish that the two products use wood from the same tree species or source region, or with the same treatment. The colour of the grain cannot settle those questions either.

TIBUKKYO discusses scent, oil content and resistance to cracking, without giving test conditions for this particular bead. Those statements remain the seller’s description, rather than TRB’s experience. Wax, oil or other surface treatments—and suitable care—still need to be confirmed for the individual object.
