Lapis LazuliDeep-blue stone in plates and spinner buttons

Lapis lazuli brings a richly patterned blue surface to EDC. It can become a plate made by an independent maker or form part of a spinner-button configuration with zirconium. Start with the part the stone covers, then look at its colour and flecks.

A plate by Liu Erliang and Ziii's Element buttons show two different uses. Neither establishes that an entire toy is made from lapis lazuli: a broad plate and a small button place the stone in different roles.

01 / COLOUR AND FLECKS

What makes the blue surface sparkle?

The plate in this photograph has a deep-blue ground scattered with small gold-coloured flecks. Its broad, flat surface makes them easy to see. GIA describes lapis lazuli as a rock containing several minerals, principally lazurite, calcite and pyrite. Lazurite supplies the vivid blue; pyrite can produce the golden sparkle.

That background does not identify every fleck in this photograph or establish that gold was used. The composition, origin and treatment of a particular piece still depend on information about that stone.

02 / A MAKER-MADE PLATE

Liu Erliang: a new surface, with a separate body beneath

The same article shows these plates together. The lapis lazuli plate is in the middle. These are surface options, not evidence for the material of an entire toy.

A broad stone face on a distinct component

In an article dated 30 October 2024, YEDC moves from its own plate release to work by players. It says its plate design data is open for others to use, then presents lapis lazuli and white-shell pieces credited to Liu Erliang. The lapis plate is a third-party creation introduced by YEDC, not a factory-made toy whose entire body is lapis lazuli.

The photograph of the blue plate is followed by the label for lapis lazuli, and another photograph shows several plates together. The stone visibly covers a darker part underneath. The article does not give separate dimensions, weight or attachment details for this third-party plate, or identify the material of the body below it.

The price and quantity for the QUEEN release earlier in the article do not apply to this plate. Before ordering or commissioning one, confirm the intended host version and fitting method with its maker. The article title alone is not a compatibility specification.

03 / STONE WITH ZIRCONIUM

Ziii Element: lapis lazuli in the buttons

Ziii Studio's update of 4 January 2025 lists Dawn Mini spinner bodies separately from Element buttons. One button configuration is described as lapis with zirconium and was listed as available at the time. This records a stone-and-metal button configuration, not a lapis lazuli Dawn Mini body.

The article gives the standard buttons a diameter of 24.5 mm and a thickness of 12.8 mm, and says Element buttons share those dimensions. They describe the complete buttons, not the thickness of the lapis stone. The article gives no separate stone weight or method for joining the metal and stone.

The maker notes that patterns in natural materials vary. It is worth looking at the stone surface of the particular set you are considering: a sample photograph cannot promise identical patterns. The maker's statements about pits and mineral intergrowths are not a substitute for gem identification.

04 / HANDLING AND CARE

Scratches, knocks and treatments need separate answers

GIA lists lapis lazuli at Mohs 5–6, depending on composition, with fair toughness. Mohs hardness describes relative resistance to scratching; it is not a drop-test rating. No impact tests for these EDC configurations are presented here.

Some lapis is dyed, waxed or oiled, and heat or solvents can affect those treatments. The EDC sources do not disclose treatment, so an even colour does not establish that the stone is untreated.

For the stone, GIA recommends warm, soapy water and a test on a small, inconspicuous area first. That is not an instruction to immerse a whole toy with magnets, a metal base or an unknown adhesive. Ask its maker about cleaning, disassembly and repairs.
