MicartaFabric texture, paper laminates and removable parts
In EDC, Micarta can put a woven texture under your fingertips, form a magnetic back insert, or cover just one side of a knife handle. Start with its layers and surface, then look at how it works alongside the parts inside.
POPO retains the fabric texture, Tapedrive uses a separate back insert, and LEAP turns red layers into a design detail. One material name can describe quite different machining and assembly choices.
Product material statements are distinguished here from the material manufacturer’s technical background. Undisclosed suppliers, grades and formulations remain unknown; photographs identify the products and parts shown.

POPO: letting the fabric texture show
This fabric-based version removes the earlier ripple pattern and retains the material’s texture rather than a uniform printed design.
Retaining texture and individual variation
KAiS used fabric-based Micarta for this POPO version, removing the earlier ripple pattern to retain the material’s own texture. Pale woven lines run through the dark grey surface and change direction around the rounded edges and contours. Material and machining position both contribute to the appearance.
The maker lists this fabric-based POPO at 23g. That figure belongs to this product configuration; it is neither a material density nor a weight shared by all fabric-based sliders. The announcement also states that each piece has a different pattern.
The purchase notes describe a relatively dry surface when new that becomes smoother with handling. Darkening, sound and feel are also the maker’s observations. They are treated here as descriptions of this product, without a universal patina timetable or an assumption that every polish, coating or resin formulation offers the same grip.
Tapedrive: one insert, three separate parts
The glue-free magnetic back insert is retained through the central logo piece and body.
A removable exterior insert, with different materials inside
For this zirconium-alloy Tapedrive update, EDCELL increased the thickness of the Micarta back insert, linking the change to grip comfort. The exploded photograph shows the brown insert, central logo piece and body separately. Micarta forms the rear contact surface rather than the whole product.
The insert uses glue-free magnetic retention, secured through the central logo piece and body. Internal parts changed from Teflon to PEEK, while the lanyard attachment changed from titanium alloy to zirconium alloy. The exterior insert and moving internal parts are separate material changes; the PEEK parts should not be identified as Micarta.
LEAP Zhongshen: red layers and the parts inside
The maker calls this exterior material double-red-line Micarta. Four red lines are visible along the assembled edge.
Using the layers as a design feature
ProxyEDC selected what it calls double-red-line Micarta for the Zhongshen version, retaining a broad caramel-coloured face and carving a totem pattern into it. Four red lines are visible from the side. The announcement also describes a broad red area on the internal base plate when opened, making the material’s layers part of the design.
The maker says it adjusts machining for each piece so that the cut meets a red-layer cross-section measuring 0.1mm. This describes the machining position for this version, not the overall sheet thickness or a general machining tolerance.
The internal assembly uses a steel cartridge, a PEEK push block and precut Teflon cord. The set also included a separate titanium BETA version with a four-track ball-groove limiting system. Its structure should not be transferred to the Micarta version: the exterior, internal contact parts and companion titanium model serve different roles.
From layered sliders to a single handle scale
KAiS’s second-generation Lucky Candy guide is more specific about its Micarta version: Micarta upper and lower plates, black PEI and PEEK listed for the middle layer, a light polish and a product weight of 22g. A material version name can refer to the exterior plates while the middle layer remains separate. The source does not give an independently measured weight for each middle-layer configuration.
Ruisha’s paper-based Micarta EKK2.0 uses that material only on the front handle scale. The lock side is titanium alloy, the blade uses Wuwei-pattern Damascus, and the thumb disc, pivot collars, backspacer and pocket clip use twist-pattern Zircuti. The announcement explicitly says the paper-based material was bought from a domestic Chinese material supplier and that imported origin could not be verified. A material name alone does not establish provenance or supplier.
The same name can cover different surface treatments
MTAK documents a different finishing sequence for its RELIC version: remove the CNC tool marks, apply a thin epoxy-resin layer over the surface to harden it, then fine-sand and polish to what the maker calls a near-mirror effect. This is a process statement about a particular product; it does not establish that the underlying laminate also uses an epoxy resin formulation.
POPO retains its fabric texture, Lucky Candy uses a light polish, and RELIC adds a thin surface layer. Surface treatment, contact position and internal construction all matter when comparing feel and wear. A handling description for a dry or uncoated surface is not automatically a care method for a coated finished product.
Micarta: the name and the formulation
Norplex-Micarta’s UltreX documentation still identifies Micarta as a trademark. It describes paper- or cotton-fabric-reinforced phenolic laminates and lists Paper, Linen and Canvas product families. Differences in the paper or woven reinforcement provide different starting points for texture, cut edges and machined surfaces.
This guide follows the EDC makers’ use of the name Micarta for their products. Those names do not independently establish the actual supplier, resin formulation or grade. Fabric-based and paper-based descriptions help distinguish versions, but photographs cannot identify the resin chemistry; G10 and all other laminates should not be treated as synonyms.
