MATERIAL ATLAS

RubberFrom graphic patches to a thumb-operated tail switch

Rubber can play a small but visible role in EDC. CHIMAGO’s raised graphic patches and the FM2 flashlight’s tail-switch cover put it to two different uses: decoration and operation.

There is more to a metal EDC item than its metal body. A removable patch on a bag and a textured switch at the tail can each have their own material specification. Identifying the exact part or layer tells you more than labelling the whole item “rubber”.

Both product sources here use the word rubber without identifying a formulation or hardness. Graphics, surface texture and switch layout help explain the intended use; durability and feel still belong to the particular finished product.

CHIMAGO’s bag display combines a portrait with two long skeletal designs. The brand describes the patch series as rubber; that material description does not include the blue bag.

Small parts for bags and gear

CHIMAGO: raised graphics and hook backing

CHIMAGO introduced this rubber patch series in September 2026. The release lists three designs: a large portrait patch, a spine motif and a skull motif. They are graphic accessories for gear and clothing. A slider teaser elsewhere in the same article does not establish that the slider body is rubber.

The brand describes thick rubber with embossed detail and raised graphics, and separately specifies hook backing. The graphic face, the fastening on its back and the surface that receives it on a bag have different roles. Hook-and-loop describes the fastening system; it does not establish that all those parts use the same rubber.

The photograph shows a portrait and two long motifs arranged on a blue bag, giving a sense of their proportions and how they work together. It is not a one-to-one illustration of the three named designs, so it does not identify each long patch by its release name. The separately offered display board is another accessory.

The operating surface

FM2: rubber where the thumb presses

A close view of the FM2 tail in a September 2022 review. The author describes the switch as rubber-covered; the material claim concerns the cover, not the surrounding metal body.

In a September 2022 FM2 flashlight review, the author describes a rubber-covered tail switch with an anti-slip pattern. The close-up shows fine texture on the black circular pressing surface, surrounded by metal. The material identification applies to the switch cover.

The reviewer found the surface comfortable and the feedback from light and firm presses distinct. Those are impressions of the author’s FM2, involving the rubber surface, switch and assembly together. They are neither a universal description of how rubber feels nor a TRB hands-on finding.

Small contact parts deserve a closer look even on a metal EDC item. “Rubber-covered” alone does not establish the rubber type, waterproof rating, press life or the behaviour of other FM2 configurations.

Names and conditions of use

Rubber is not yet a formulation

Trelleborg’s industrial rubber information separates types such as EPDM, NR/SBR and NBR and describes different environmental suitability. That distinction helps explain why one general property table cannot stand in for every rubber accessory. It does not establish that Trelleborg supplied either product here.

CHIMAGO promotes its patches as highly elastic, resistant to deformation and hard-wearing, without providing the relevant test conditions. These descriptions convey the brand’s intended qualities; they do not establish freedom from ageing or wear, or a defined service life. The FM2 review likewise supplies no formulation or hardness for its switch cover.

For a replacement part, check the model, location and fitting method as well as the material name. If cleaning-agent compatibility or outdoor durability matters, ask the maker for the material and instructions for that part. Sharing a black colour, flexibility or the name rubber does not establish that two parts are interchangeable.
