Swedish Powder DamascusFollow the light and dark patterns across four EDC designs
From light etching and angled cuts to the beads and buttons of an assembled spinner.
The most immediate feature of the patterned steels shown here is the contrast between neighboring lines. Those patterns run across outlines, buttons and recesses, changing their appearance on flat and curved surfaces. Material descriptions, cutting direction, finishing and the assembled configuration each explain a different part of what you see.

Read beyond the material name
This atlas follows products described as ruifen in their Chinese introductions. Hibernating Goose goes further for Rubble Slim, explicitly identifying austenitic patterned stock produced by Damasteel in Sweden. The Ti Amo, Xiangmo and two-arm Hun introductions do not provide the same level of supplier and grade information.
Damasteel itself makes more than one material system. DS95X is an austenitic powder-based Damascus steel made from 304L and 316L. DS93X uses RWL34 and PMC27 and belongs to the martensitic family. The manufacturer states that DS95X cannot be hardened by heat treatment, whereas DS93X has hardening and tempering conditions.
A heat-treated knife steel's hardness therefore cannot be assigned to every ruifen spinner. Austenitic describes a metallurgical family; a pattern name and a specific grade are different details. Unspecified products here are not assigned DS95X or DS93X grades.
A light etch brings out the pattern
Rubble Slim body and button. The introduction specifies a light acid etch but does not name the steel grade.
Light etching and a deeply dished button
Hibernating Goose gives a comparatively specific material description for Rubble Slim - r188 Version. It calls this update a blue-tongue-pattern ruifen version and identifies austenitic stock from Damasteel. It does not state a specific grade.
The maker uses a light acid etch to increase pattern contrast. In the photo, alternating rings extend across the body outline, while the deeply dished button presents another cluster of finer patterns. Finish and component shape work together to produce the visible result.
This version is listed at 77 g, with a stated normal variation of plus or minus 1 g. That is a product specification for this version, not a general weight for the material or a measurement made for this atlas.
Cutting direction changes the presentation
The ruifen Hun. The angled cut is the maker's description, not a steel grade inferred from its photograph.
Follow the pattern along the outline
For the ruifen version of Yan EDC's two-arm Hun, the maker specifically describes an angled cut that gives the pattern a continuous, extended diagonal presentation. Follow the lines around the open ends, then compare them with the rings on the central button.
The same release lists dama and ruifen as separate material options. Each has its own photograph and description. Both being listed at 48 g does not make their photographs, materials or properties interchangeable.
The ruifen entry does not disclose the supplier, grade or heat-treatment state. The article title's reference to a blade material concerns the separate SM100 option, not the grade of this ruifen Hun.
The assembly matters too
The ruifen Xiangmo with red beads. The listed 70 g weight is for the configuration with beads fitted.
Keep the weight and its configuration together
Chima EDC describes its three-arm Xiangmo as using imported ruifen stock for jewellery, with a light acid treatment. Its parts list also includes a bearing and six red beads described by the maker as zircon. Those parts do not become patterned steel simply because this is the ruifen version.
The introduction separately lists 70 g with beads fitted. When comparing weight, first check whether the beads are installed. The figure here does not extend to other Xiangmo material versions.
The red beads create a clear visual contrast with the silver-grey patterned structure. The supplier and steel grade are not disclosed. The description 'for jewellery' alone does not establish skin-contact safety or a guarantee against rust.
Similar rings, different structures
The short ruifen Ti Amo. Similar rings do not establish shared stock or a shared pattern designation with another product.
Pattern across a side-rotation design
17EDC's short ruifen Ti Amo retains its side-rotation structure. The introduction calls the material Swedish powder Damascus steel, but does not specify a supplier, grade or finishing method.
The broad central button and curved sides both show alternating rings. Reflections make some areas crisp and others softer. Its ring-like appearance resembles Rubble Slim, but that is not enough to establish the same pattern designation or steel grade.
The short ruifen Ti Amo is listed at 73 g with a 50 mm spinning diameter. Those dimensions, weight and structural description belong to this particular version. A material name cannot substitute for comparing the assembled products in hand.
