Vegetable-tanned LeatherSlider sleeves, stitched pouches and leather inlays in wooden frames
Vegetable tanning describes how leather is tanned, not which animal it comes from. A fitted sleeve, a two-layer pouch and an inlay in a wooden frame each have their own material boundaries.
From LAUTIE’s PUEBLO sleeves and stitched Minerva box version to ACEdc pouches and key straps, vegetable-tanned leather forms removable coverings and everyday carry accessories. GD uses it as an exterior inlay within a wooden Mahjong slider.
Some articles explicitly specify vegetable-tanned cowhide; others say only vegetable-tanned leather. Blue goatskin, a wooden body and brass weights are separate materials. Photographs show colour and grain, while the source identifies the hide and tanning process.

PUEBLO sleeves: material and fit are separate specifications
LAUTIE’s handmade poker-slider sleeve, made with leatherworker Lao Hu, is described as imported Italian PUEBLO vegetable-tanned leather and fits versions 1.0 and 2.0. The article does not name the animal species, so the PUEBLO name alone is not used to supply one.
The sleeve covers a metal slider. LAUTIE links gradual darkening to friction, oils, sweat and sunlight during use. This is the maker’s description of this sleeve’s ageing behaviour, not a promise that every leather finish will change in the same way.
The sleeve fits LAUTIE poker-slider versions 1.0 and 2.0. The visible metal toy is a separate object from its covering.
The stitched version: cowhide is explicitly identified
The later stitched sleeve is also handmade by Lao Hu and still fits poker-slider versions 1.0 and 2.0. LAUTIE specifies imported Italian Minerva box, described as oily, through-dyed, soft vegetable-tanned cowhide, with a naturally tumbled grain and soft feel.
Unlike the earlier article that says only PUEBLO vegetable-tanned leather, this source explicitly names cowhide. Two-colour pieces and prominent stitching describe the joined design; colour, sewing and tanning are different characteristics.
LAUTIE’s stitched version uses what the source calls Minerva box: oily, through-dyed, soft vegetable-tanned cowhide.
Two-layer and hollow pouches use different leathers
For ACEdc Model A, the text identifies the brown side as imported Italian Badalassi top-grain cowhide, and the specification image adds vegetable tanning. The Tiffany-blue side is imported French Alran Sully goatskin. The pouch is hand-sewn with inner and outer leather layers, and the source does not describe the blue goatskin as vegetable-tanned.
Model B in the same article instead uses imported Italian top-grain Pueblo, described as matte vegetable-tanned cowhide. Its hollow construction creates storage space, and a side ring can attach to a strap or belt. These are different constructions and material specifications; the Model A photograph does not depict Model B.
ACEdc Model A: the text identifies brown Badalassi top-grain cowhide, with vegetable tanning specified in the accompanying information image. The blue side is Alran Sully goatskin; the two sides are not both described as vegetable-tanned cowhide.
Key straps: the standard cowhide and a surprise variant differ
A separate ACEdc key-strap article specifies imported Italian Minerva box top-grain vegetable-tanned cowhide for the regular version, with naturally varying grain. The maker describes gradual softening and visible ageing with use.
The article also says that some orders in this release will receive a surprise version made from another saddle leather. It does not provide the same complete animal and tanning information for that alternative, so the regular Minerva box specification does not cover every item shipped.
For its Zaoyin Naigai attachment example, the source requires removal of the snap dome and press bead before attaching the strap. This is an assembly condition for that product, not a universal method for every lanyard or fidget.
Mahjong slider: leather becomes an inlay in a wooden frame
GD EDC’s mechanical Mahjong slider places vegetable-tanned leather within a wooden frame. The source calls the body East African blackwood, with brass blocks inside for weight. The leather forms an exterior inlay rather than the whole slider body.
GD specifies natural-colour Italian vegetable-tanned leather, with the leather work carried out by its partner studio Xiangsan. This article does not state the animal species. Its purchase notes explicitly warn that the leather ships in its original colour, which may differ from the demonstration video and change later with use.
A darker, aged appearance should therefore be distinguished from the colour on arrival. The oiling method mentioned in this article is specific to that product and is not a general care recommendation for every vegetable-tanned leather or mixed-material EDC object.
Vegetable tanning is a process; cowhide and goatskin identify animals
The Italian vegetable-tanned leather consortium explains that vegetable tanning uses tannins from plants to transform animal hide into leather. “Vegetable” identifies the tanning agent’s source; it does not mean the leather itself is made from plants.
“Vegetable-tanned cowhide” supplies both an animal source and a tanning method. “Vegetable-tanned leather” alone does not identify the animal. Commercial names such as PUEBLO and Minerva box, and descriptions such as hand-sewn, matte or through-dyed, each retain their own meaning.
The consortium reference explains the process without establishing certification for any product on this page. Each article provides the specific evidence for the leather, its surface condition and the versions it fits.
